Meeting Notes: March 2012 Meeting

CMQG

Update: We now have an email address! - columbus.modern.quilt@gmail.com

March: Thread Painting and Bobbin Work
We started the meeting with ‘introduce yourself and give the name of your favorite quilting web site.’ (Please note: these meeting notes are a bit late getting to you because being the conscientious scribe that I am, I had to check out each site before forwarding the links.)(yw)
Here goes the list:
Baby Talk – In the past month, two of our members have delivered small fry…
Our founding member, AnneMarie had a boy named Miles and Jacqueline had a girl; Elise. Congratulations to both of you and your families!

Little dresses for Africa – Don’t forget this fabulous philanthropy project. Directions on how to make these easy to construct dresses that are no bigger than a pillowcase and so much appreciated can be found on this link àhttp://www.littledressesforafrica.org/blog/?page_id=477 Bring your finished dresses to the May meeting.

Announcements
· If you’re interested in showing folks how to hand quilt at the Chick-let & Chocolate event on April 21 in Worthington, let Dana know.
· A beautiful hand quilting frame has been donated to our guild. If you’d like to give it a go and work on some hand quilting, see Abbe.
· If anyone has tools or notions that you just had to have and now you just don’t use, bring them in. Someone else in the guild might like to use them. Simply exchange names and phone numbers and agree on when you’d like them returned. Sounds like a great way to try out some new quilting gadgets.
· For those of you going to Cincinnati for the International Quilt Festival in April, the Cincinnati chapter of the Modern Quilt Guild is going to have a get together on Saturday April 14 at 8 PM. See Dana for more details. And since the National Quilting Association show is in Columbus in June, Nicole, Kathy, and Barb are going to look into coordinating an event for our Modern Quilt Guild to host Cincinnati. More info to come very soon on that since June is not all that far away.
· The first ever QuiltCon coordinated by the Modern Quilt Guild, will be held in Austin Texas February 21, 2013. For those with inquiring minds, here’s the link to the site http://themodernquiltguild.com/
· Idea…What do quilters like to do almost more than quilting…shopping for fabric of course! Abbe made an awesome suggestion of road trips to check out the quilt shops around the state. Needless to say, this suggestion to increase our stash was very well received, so Abbe will share more info at the April meeting.

Wrist Pin Cushion Swap - Fabric was swapped for the wrist pin cushions so it will be fun to see all of the different versions that are traded next month.
Thread Painting and Bobbin Work Demos – were provided by Catie. How cool was it to see the difference that some special thread techniques can make? Thanks, Catie!

See You This Thursday!

This Thursday, March 15 from 7-9 pm is our monthly meeting at Quilt Trends. We're going to learn about thread painting and can't wait to see you! Here are a few things you might want to bring:

1. Quilts for show and tell - Or bring something you're struggling with, and we'll give advice!

2. Books for the book exchange!

3. Fabric for our new swap: Wrist Pincushion Swap!! – Pincushions! What would we do without them? Our next swap will be wrist pincushions. Here’s how it will work: If you’d like to participate, bring 4 or 5 coordinating scraps of fabric that are at least 5” square in a baggie with your name on it to the March meeting. We’ll do the clever put-them-all-in-a-bag-and-pull-one-out to find out who you’ll be designing for. Here’s a website with lots of examples and directions à http://tipnut.com/22-free-pincushion-patterns/. Bring finished pincushions to the April meeting.

4. Gourmet cupcakes for everyone. Just kidding! Unless you really want to! ;)

February: Cool Curved Piecing

Next Meeting: March 15 and the demo will be thread painting and bobbin work - - you won’t want to miss it. Hope to see you all there!

Sew In Alert!: The next Sew In at Quilt Trends will be March 10. The two sessions will run from 11:00-5:00. Keep an eye out for the sign up via email.

And don’t forget…This April 21st, we're going to be doing a hand sewing demonstration at Chick Lit and Chocolate. They are looking for volunteers to hand quilt for a couple hours to show visitors how it’s done. If you are interested, see Dana.
Meeting Notes:
We had a great turn out at the February meeting. And since we all love our gadgets, the meeting began with everyone introducing themselves and sharing their favorite quilting tool. Who would have thought that so many of us love our rulers! Other favorites include Kona color card, eQuilter, curved blade scissors, Fons & Porter binding tool, and quilting gloves. Whew!
Philanthropy Project: Nancy Zieman of Nancy’s Notions sponsors a project called Little Dresses for Africa. To quote the web site: “Simple dresses are made out of pillow cases, and distributed through the orphanages, churches and schools in Africa to plant in the hearts of little girls that they are worthy!” The dresses are no larger than a pillow case (which can actually be used for an automatically hemmed sun dress). They use 5/8 to 1-1/8 yd. fabric, bias tape, and elastic if you wish. Anyone who would like to participate can bring finished sundresses to the May meeting. They will then be boxed up; sent to Nancy Zieman in Wisconsin who in turn will ship them to Africa. Here are some links with more information as well as directions for these cute and much needed little dresses: Little Dresses for Africa à http://www.littledressesforafrica.org/blog/ Nancy’s Notions àhttp://www.nancysnotions.com/jump.do?itemID=5&itemType=LANDING&page=creative
Wrist Pincushion Swap!! – Pincushions! What would we do without them? Our next swap will be wrist pincushions. Here’s how it will work: If you’d like to participate, bring 4 or 5 coordinating scraps of fabric that are at least 5” square in a baggie with your name on it to the March meeting. Demo – Sue gave a great demo on piecing curves using the ever so clever Curve Master Foot. Thanks, Sue!
