See you Thursday!

Just a quick reminder - Our holiday party is coming up Thursday, December 20th!

It will start at 7 pm Karen’s in Upper Arlington at 3857 Fairlington at 7 pm (thanks, Karen!). If at the time of the meeting you have anything that you crafted for Christmas, please bring it for show and tell.

Speaking of sharing, please feel free to bring an appetizer or other nibbly food to enjoy with the adult beverages which you can also bring along to share (thank goodness our mothers taught us to share!).

Games!

Ugly Fabric Game! We'll have a white elephant ugly fabric gift exchange again this year - please bring a piece of ugly, wrapped fabric to participate in the exchange. If you don't have any ugly fabric, I'm sure there's a few folks who can bring an extra to share the ugly fabric wealth.

Pretty Fabric Game! If you like, you can also bring a yard of pretty, modern fabric for our fabric musical musical chairs game that we played at the November meeting, and a pair of scissors. Everyone had a fun time and we want to play again!

Fabric Challenge Update We also have our Madrona Road fabric in for our challenge from the Modern Quilt Guild. Please sign up here if you are interested in participating in the challenge so we can make sure there is enough fabric for everyone. The fabric will be handed out at the December and January meetings for those interested.

CMQG Meeting Notes November: Paper Piecing with Panache

Good News!
Kathy G. is doing well after her foot surgery. We missed you Kathy and wish you a speedy recovery!

Winter 2013 Fabric Challenge
The National Modern Quilt Guild has announced the Winter 2013 Fabric Challenge (Here’s the link for more details:http://themodernquiltguild.com/2012/11/01/announcing-winter-2012-fabric-challenge/ ).

The fabric is Madrona Road by Violet Craft for Michael Miller. We talked about participating in the challenge and then using our work for the CMQG at NQA in June (it’s the two birds with one stone thingy).  “Celebrate America!” is the theme for this year’s NQA show. So we kicked around a lot of ideas on what theme we could use for our exhibit. Stars and Stripes was the group’s favorite. Stacy will go back to NQA with our ideas, so we’ll have to sit on the edge of our seats for a bit longer.  Fabric for the challenge should arrive by mid-December.

CMQG Quilt for Quilt Con
Kathy F. showed the nine blocks we were sent from Modern Quilt Guild and explained the plans for the quilt. A pieced state of Ohio block will be made and placed on the quilt top. Catie has offered to quilt it for us once it’s pieced (Thanks Catie!!). Once it's done, we'll send it to Austin for the show in February and then it will be donated to a children's shelter in Austin.

Sew In: Saturday, Dec. 8
The next Sew In is just a few weeks away. You can work on anything you wish, but we will be working on the Quilt Con quilt at the Sew In, so if you’d like to pitch in, we’d love to see you there!

Paper Piecing
Angela gave a great demo on paper piecing and showed some of her amazing work. She also talked about designing your own paper piecing patterns. Thanks Angela!

Musical Fabric Stash
Most everyone brought their fabric for the musical fabric stash game. A fine time was had by all.

Next Month
December 20 meeting will be at Karen’s in Upper Arlington at 3857 Fairlington at 7 pm (thanks, Karen!). We talked about a fabric swap and white elephant. More news to come on this fun event!

See you all next month!

See you Thursday!

This week we'll be discussing ideas for a possible quilt show in the spring - what theme would we like to use?

We'll also have a paper piecing demo by Angela - yay!

And at our October meeting, we were so busy partying we forgot to play any games. So, we'll play games this Thursday, November 15th.

Of course, you don't need to play the games to attend the meeting! But it should be a fun time!

As always, feel free to bring a finished quilt to show and tell (or an unfinished one!) and books, if you like, for the quilty book exchange.

Here's the info you need to play the games!

Musical Fabric Stash
Each person in the circle starts with 1 yard of fabric.  The music begins and you’ll pass the fabric around in a circle.  Once the music stops, you’ll cut the fabric in your hands in half.  You keep half and then the next round starts.  We’ll continue to pass and slash the fabrics until we end up with scrap-sized pieces left.  The fabric you keep each round becomes yours to take home, so you’ll leave with a yard of various prints.
What to bring:
-          As many 1 yard cuts of fabric as you’d like (we can do multiple smaller rounds or a few really large rounds).  Fabric should be quilting-weight cotton with a modern design. (We are the modern quilt guild after all!)
-          Scissors
Strip Poker
Building on the fun from our 1stAnniversary party, strip poker is back again!  We’ll play rounds of “poker” (highest single card wins).  Each round you’ll bet a 2 ½ “ fabric strip.  Winner takes all!
What to bring:
-          As many 2 ½ “ x WOF strips as you’d like.  Jelly rolls work great for this, but you can also cut your own.

Quilt Voting

After you all have cast your votes at your local polling place, here is a fun chance to support some "local candidates" with some quilty votes!

AnneMarie and Dana (and let me know if anyone else does and I missed it!) both have quilts nominated in the Bloggers Quilt Festival, which is a fun, huge on-line quilt event that happens twice per year.

AnneMarie's fun quilt (which is available as a pattern) is up in the "Wall Hanging" category.

Dana's quilt is in the "Bed Quilt" category.

There are many other fabulous modern quilts up! Go here to vote! Voting ends November 8th.

And if looking at all those amazing quilts inspires you to get sewing, Abbe has recommended  this handy fat quarter chart - enjoy!

Sewing Machine Repair Guy

Looking for a fast, friendly sewing machine repair & maintenance guy that will come to your house? Check out

Main Sewing Service
"Repair All Makes and Models"
New and Used Sales

Phone 614-890-5296

195 N. Hempstead Rd.
Westerville, OH 43081

I personally had this service come to my house and Tom was great, cleaned and oiled my machine, and I was back to sewing wihtin 30 minutes.
They also offer 24 hour service which  I presume means they'll be to your house in within 24 hours, not that you can call them at 2am with a broken down machine.

The cost for a regular maintenance visit was $29.95+tax, but the price may have changed since I used their service about 9 months ago.

Cheers!
Cristin

Kathy G. has been working on bringing guest speakers to Columbus.  More to come on this as well.
Trish Preston was our speaker. She is the owner and founder of Two Peas in a Pod. Fabulous Folding for Fabricaholics Meeting - May Meeting Minutes!

Columbus Modern Quilt Guild - May 17
Big month for announcements! Read on for the nitty gritty details:
·         Meet Up – We’re going to be meeting with other Modern Quilt Guilds after the NQA annual show on June 16. We’ll be at the "Big Bar on 2" (clever name) in the Hyatt on the second floor (see I told you it was clever) from 4:00-6:00. Everyone will be able to order drinks and munchies from the menu.  Should be a great time to compare notes and meet up with other quilting fanatics.  Various quilt shops are being contacted to contribute door prizes too.
·         Fabric Shop Road Trip – Scheduled for July 14 which is prior to our next meeting so stay tuned to our blog for more information. We’ll be going to Fabric Shack, Lavender Street Quilts, Sewn Studio, and IKEA. (Woo hoo!)
·         Retreat – We’re looking at scheduling a retreat with the Michigan, Toledo, and Chicago Modern Quilt Guilds. If anyone knows of a central location, be sure to let Dana know.
Dresses were collected for Little Dresses for Africa. Thanks to everyone who contributed!

Cristin gave a great demo on fabric folding. Now everyone’s stash can look as neat as hers. Take a look at InColorOrder.blogspot.com for more organizational tips.

Kathy G. and Stacey have coordinated a Wonky Paint Chip Challenge (click the link for instructions!). Should be great fun. If you’d like to join in, finished projects aren’t due until October so you have plenty of time to get your paint chip and directions.

Next CMQG meeting will be July 26 – Don’t forget: This is not our usual third Thursday so mark those calendars.
See you all at the Meet Up at the Hyatt Bar on June 16!

Here they are, just right click and select "Save Image As" to download! (If you have a Mac, hold two fingers on the touchpad and click)
