At our next meeting, Thursday Feb 26th, we’re going to try Kinusaiga.
Kinusaiga is a Japanese no-sew fabric art technique where fabric scraps are pressed into slits cut into a backing material (like wood or foam) to create mosaic-like pictures, resembling "painting with fabric" or fabric collage, to form vibrant, textured designs without glue or thread.
What to bring:
- printout or drawing of your chosen design. Should be about 8”x10”. (7.75”x9.75” if you want to get technical)
- Stash of scraps (in the colors/prints you may want to use). People can share!
- Pencil
- X-acto knife
- Seam ripper
- Fabric Scissors
- Cutting mat
I’ll provide the foam board (approximately 8”x10”, 1” thick. They’ll be cut slightly smaller than 8x10 so they fit inside a frame that’s size). It will have double-sided adhesive already applied.
I’ll also have scotch tape to put your template/designs on the boards.
When finished- you can frame it in an 8x10 shadow box style frame. Something similar to this. (also available at Hobby Lobby or Michael’s).
Simple designs work best- you can search kinusaiga on Pinterest, or use coloring pages or stained glass patterns are good inspiration too. You can do large sections or backgrounds with smaller pieces.
I’ll give full instructions, and it’s super easy/quick to catch on, but you can also watch YouTube tutorials if you’re interested before we get together. (That’s how I got my “teaching credentials”! 😆)
