Color selection
I would like the foreground to be bright and scrappy. Very saturated prints that read as all one color. My favorites are common in the Cotton & Steel palette, Aqua, Mustard, Navy, and Magenta. But anything that is bright and saturated will work.

Please use low volume prints for the "background." I prefer super low volume prints, white on white, or light grey, but use what you have. No solids, novelty fabrics, or traditional batiks. 

Please do not use solids anywhere on the block. Also, please don't use prints that are too large (for example the C&S mustangs print is awesome but wouldn't work well here).
 
Please name some designers or line of fabrics you like that will help us pick the right fabric for your block 

My favorites are Carolyn Friedlander, Lizzy House, Karen Lewis, and any Cotton and Steel, especially the basics.

Directions 

Please make the block entirely scrappy throughout. For example on the x-shaped block use 4 different colors in the foreground, and 4 different corner colors on the o-block.

DO NOT sew the 4 blocks together.  You should make 4- 6.5" blocks.

January Meeting Update

The meeting was held January 28th at the Old Worthington Library.

January was a big month for us! We rolled out our new membership and had 20 members officially join and pay dues for the year! Here are the membership details you need to know:

• You may attend 2 meetings as freebies before you become a member
• You must complete the membership form and pay $10 dues by your third meeting
• Paid members receive a membership card with one-time discounts to local quilt shops
• Paid members receive a monthly newsletter
• Jennie H. (Guild Treasurer) will begin providing monthly financial reports at meetings

Leigh M. gave us an awesome demo on the One Hour Basket!  You can find the free tutorial on Craftsy. This was the perfect lead in to our first swap of the year. We'll be swapping Hour Baskets at the March meeting.  Check out this post for more details! 

Joanna M. also introduced the first challenge of the year. The Color Wheel challenge is sure to get our creative juices flowing. This challenge will be revealed at the March meeting. Check out this post for more information on how you can participate!

Color wheel challenge

Please see the general challenge rules HERE

Rules specific to the color wheel challenge:

1. You will make a mini quilt or pillow cover that is between 12 and 36 inches. It can be square, rectangular, hexagon, be creative!
2. You were assigned a crayon color and a color wheel scheme. Your mini quilt/pillow cover will need to have that particular color scheme. Please do not go by the color examples on the piece of paper, but rather by the color scheme itself (for example, if you got a purple crayon and a "complementary" color scheme, you wouldn't use the examples on the paper-blue and orange- you would use purple and its complementary color, yellow)
3. The only other colors allowed in your mini are neutrals- black, white, gray or brown. Try to use only one of these.
4. The colors in your scheme do NOT need to be used in equal amounts (for example, if you have a purple triadic scheme, your quilt could be purple and orange with just a hint of green).
5. The mini quilt/pillow cover should be made entirely by you. Make something you'll enjoy because it's yours to keep! You can choose any pattern you would like. Try something new and challenge yourself in two ways!
6. You can use any value of the colors you are assigned, as long as they are the true colors. Examples below:
1. You can use pink if red is one of your colors, because pink is a tint of red, but you cannot substitute red orange or burgundy (red violet).
2. You can use navy blue if blue is one of your colors, because navy blue is a shade of blue, but you can't substitute aqua (which is blue green).
7. There will be 5 prizes awarded for this challenge. We will vote for the first four categories, and anyone who finishes the challenge will be eligible to win the 5th:
1. Best use of color wheel theory
2. Most creative
3. Best quilting
4. Members' choice
5. Random winner
8. Most important rule- HAVE FUN creating and learning something!

In order to help everyone with the color theory aspect, here are two really good color series that are focused on quilters: Modern Cozy's 52 weeks of color, and In Color Order's Art of Choosing.

If at any point you have questions or if you missed the sign up and want to be assigned a color, please reach out to the Challenge Coordinator, Joanna Martinez. 

Pictured below is one example of each of the color schemes you could be assigned. The color circled in each color wheel would represent your crayon color.

Complementary color scheme.
For this scheme, you will be using only two colors, across each other on the color wheel.

Analogous color scheme.
For this scheme, you can use up to three colors, and you will have a choice to go to the left, right, or both sides of the crayon color.

Monochromatic color scheme.
For this scheme, you will only use your crayon color, but you can choose to use as many different values of that color as you'd like.

Rectangle color scheme.
For this scheme, you have four colors to use, and can choose either of the rectangles formed on the color wheel (but not both!)

Square color scheme.
For this scheme, you also have four colors to use.

Triadic color scheme.
For this scheme, you will use three colors in a triangle shape on the wheel.

Split Complementary color scheme.
For this scheme, you will be using three colors, and can choose one of three color groupings formed by the "Y" shape.

Hour Basket Swap

Our first 2016 swap will be an easy one- an Hour Basket Swap!

For those of you that missed the demo, here is a link to the tutorial by kelbysews. It really does only take an hour!

The swap rules are simple:
1. This is a blind swap. You will be assigned (by email) a swap partner about a week after sign ups close. They will not know you're making for them, so don't give it away!
2. You will make an hour basket tailored to your partner's tastes (favorite colors, designers, etc)
3. If you want to post preview pics, use the hashtag #cbusmqswap (this works on Instagram or Facebook, but posts might not be seen on FB depending on your privacy settings)
4. You bring the basket to the March meeting to exchange!

It's that simple! This swap round has no extras or any other rules, so it's a good way to get your feet wet if you've never swapped before.
